Hi, I’m Julie. I’m an Usui Holy Fire Reiki Master Teacher and Founder of Jiva Reiki School where I teach people how to live happier, healthier lives. Today we are going to be doing a meditation for understanding the power of our thoughts. In Reiki, we learn that everything in the Universe is made up of energy-from the thoughts we think to the feelings we feel. And, sometimes, we don’t realize the power of our thoughts: not just our conscious thoughts but also our unconscious thoughts and our programming that was created during childhood.
So, sit up nice and tall. Close your eyes. Just begin to focus on your breath-on the inhale and the exhale. Then start to bring into your mind, something that you love, be it a person, a place, or a thing. Let it be just something that you really really love and fully bring it into your mind’s eye. Feel it. Sense it. Know it. Imagine it. And, then notice your breath. Notice the muscles in your body. And, then bring your energy, your attention, and your awareness back on your breath. Completely let go of the thing that you love. And, just focus again, on your inhale and your exhale. Maybe even mentally repeat, “I release, the thing that I love and I bring my full energy and attention to my breath”. Now think of something that you dislike, or hate, or that makes you really angry. Bring that to your full attention in your mind’s eye. Feel it. Sense it. Know it. Imagine it. Dive 100% into that person, place, thing, or situation. And, then notice your breath. Notice your body. Notice your muscles. Then bring your energy, your attention, and your awareness back to your breath again. Then mentally repeat, “I release this thing that I hate and I bring my full attention to my breath.” Then slowly, begin to flicker your eyes open.
Could you feel the difference between your body’s response to when you focused on something you loved versus when you focused on something you hated? For me, when I am focusing on something that I love, or something that makes me feel good, I can easily take deep, long, slow conscious breaths and fill my body up with life energy. My body feels relaxed. And when I think about something I hate, my breaths become shallow. And, I feel it right here in my chest. And, my mind gets tight and I get obsessive thoughts. My body just tightens up. And, so in this little meditation, what I realize is that, my thoughts are so powerful. My thoughts are so powerful. Our power is always in the present moment, to choose how we are going to react to something, to choose to be conscious creators in our lives by choosing to think the thoughts that make us feel good. It isn’t all about just thinking thoughts that make us feel good. We can’t go from where we are to always wanting to feel good to feeling good by just thinking positive thoughts. There are steps in between like acknowledging those unprocessed feelings, giving ourselves spaces to process them, heal them, and nurture ourselves. That takes time and it is a process.
